Global Ethic and economy

From the beginning, concern for economic questions has been a central element of the Global Ethic theme. Hans Küng published the first fruits of this discussion already in 1997 in his book "A Global Ethic for Global Politics and Economics".

In the wake of numerous scandals and crises in the business and financial world of the 1990's, it has become increasingly evident that the global economy needs an ethical framework.

Together with business ethicists, business people and other practitioners from the spheres of business and the sciences, the Global Ethic Foundation has drawn up the Manifesto "Global Ethic - Consequences for Global Businesses". On the basis of the "Global Ethic Declaration", this manifesto sketches central aspects of a global economic ethic, which are of fundamental importance for many areas of economic activity.

In autumn 2009, in cooperation with the UN Global Compact and the Novartis Foundation, this Manifesto was presented at the UN General Headquarters in New York and undersigned by prominent personalities from the realms of business, politics, science, and religion. Among the signatories to date are James Wolfensohn, former President of the World Bank, Daniel Vasella, CEO of Novartis, Juan Somavia, General Director of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Prince El Hassan bin Talal of Jordan (Augsburg Peace Prize Laureate 2008), and Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate from South Africa.

Since then, the Manifesto has been presented and discussed at various international events - among them, at the Peking University, at the annual symposium of the Novartis Foundation in Basel, and at the Parliament of World Religions in Melbourne in 2009. At the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit (New York, 23 - 25 June 2010), the international promotion of the Manifesto received further impetus.

For the process of propagating and implementing the Manifesto, the Global Ethic Foundation has created a special website.

There one finds the text of the Manifesto, the list of subscribers, and information about the process of its international promotion. All of those interested in this project are invited to enter their names as "signatories" or "supporters" of the Manifesto.
